Consumers Stop Unreasonable Price Rises.
- Call Center for Consumer Prices
The Korea National Council of Consumer Organizations (Hereafter KNCCO; Chairperson: Kim Cheon-ju) has been surveying the prices of consumer goods since last March. According to the findings of the survey, consumer prices have been rising sharply compared to 2007. Even though flour companies have dropped their prices, the prices of ramen and those of confectionaries and bakeries are still on the rise. This kind of consumer price rise without any accompanying economic growth is seriously affecting ordinary people’s lives and the national economy. As consumer prices are expected to be high in the 2nd half of this year, people's suffering will continue.
Along with the flour price, the price of milk, ice cream and snacks rose in April. In addition, companies reduced the volume of their products and raised the prices a few months later. As some product prices are going up, other companies are planning to raise their prices too.
As such, the KNCCO has opened a ‘consumer price call center’ to prevent unreasonable price increases, support ordinary people’s lives, and listen to consumers’ opinions.
The call center will receive consumers’ calls and investigate reported cases of abuse. If necessary, the call center will ask the relevant government organizations for an investigation and the suppression of price increases.
Consumers may report cases of price increase to their nearest call center among the 13 call centers situated around the country. These call centers can be reached by phone or Internet, and will be linked through a banner on members’ websites or the KNCCO’s home page.
