Korea National Council of Consumer Organizations Hosts ‘1424 Conporter Selection Contest in Collaboration with Cyworld

Korea National Council of Consumer Organizations Hosts ‘1424 Conporter Selection Contest in Collaboration with Cyworld

Shaping New Digital Culture for Youth: Exciting Consumer World for Teens and Youngsters,’ an Event Hosted by the Korea National Council of Consumer Organizations (President Lee Haeng-ja)

The event was inaugurated by the ‘1424 Conporter Contest,’ a contest which began on November 11 for a 20-day period to grant the honorific title of ‘Conporters’ to winning contestants.  Teens and young adults aged 14 to 24 were eligible to participate in the contest.

To be the luck winners to be dubbed “Conporters,” a term coined by grafting “consumer” and “reporter,” contestants had to take snapshots of images related to consumer issues they encountered from their surroundings, using a digital camera or a phone camera, and submit the images accompanied with a text detailing the problem and their personal input in the matter for online publication.  The Korea National Council of Consumer Organizations (hereinafter referred to as the Council) then reviews the published photos to award prizes to the better ones, and, after the contest, it will study the reported cases to find solutions for improvement.

SK Communications will take part in the initiative by providing an online platform for information exchange between Conporters.  A mini website was created within the website of Cyworld (www.cyworld.com/conporter).

Council President Lee Haeng-ja is confident that this program, jointly conducted with Cyworld, will prove to be a natural and fun-filled tool to encourage teens and young adults to exchange information content that are more sensible and meaningful than solely entertainment-driven content such as celebrity photos and shocking images.

The ‘1424 Conporter Contest,’ begun on November 11, will last until the 30 of this month.  Winning entries will be selected in two age categories: Budding Conporters aged 14 to 19, and Young Tree Conporter aged 20 to 24.  Each category will have 1 Best Conporter, 2 Nice Conporters, 3 Aha! Conporters and 5 Deuce! Conporters, who will go home with latest mobile phones, 5 Mega pixel cameras,  128mb MP3 players, cultural event gift certificates and other generous prizes.  The Council will maintain the Conporter Mini Website even after the closing of the contest, so that the Conporters can continue to monitor and report on consumer affairs.

On the program of ‘Shaping New Digital Culture for Youth: Exciting Consumer World for Teens and Youngster’ is also ‘the 1424 Conporter Photo Show (provisional title),’ scheduled for December 18.

The 1424 Conporter Contest and the 1424 Conporter Photo Show are expected to give a rare opportunity to think about social issues, especially to 12th-graders, preparing to move up to the adult world on the heels of the college entrance qualification exam.

The Council and the Headquarters for Right of Access to Information Activists  will be jointly overseeing the hosting of the event.

‘Watch out for that Step or else a Big Boo-boo’

These are the stairs connecting Building C to Building B of the Siheung Municipal Apartment Complex in Siheung, Gyeonggi-do.

The passage between two buildings used to be barred by a fence, and they apparently wanted to make it more convenient for the residents of the complex by putting stairs there.

But, golly!

You’d better watch out for those rocks sticking out from the cement bed.  Even the heights of steps are never the same.  Just perfect to have your ankles twisted.

It’s pitch dark here at night.  Not a single lamp around the stairs.

When it’s tricky for a strong, young guy like me to go up these stairs and come away unscathed, what would it be like for the elderly and children?
