Discussion Meeting on Price Stabilization through Price Analysis
The Korea National Council of Consumer Organizations (President Kim Cheon-ju) organized Price Analysis Team in January 2009 in order to select and analyze items that require cost analysis among products and services that are closely related to consumers. The purpose is to ensure fair trade, establish market order, and contribute price stabilization by providing useful information to consumers.
Items subject to analysis will include living necessities and products influenced by monopolistic or oligopolistic industrial structure, and they will be selected among the products that rely heavily on imported raw materials. Items that require cost analysis will be selected by the quarter of the year and month after referring to the price research on daily necessities conducted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, reports submitted to the Price Report Center, data provided by the Korea National Statistical Office, and media releases.
The council plans to have a certified public accountant analyze the cost after conducting a separate survey by referring to the prices of international products, raw materials, price index, and foreign exchange rate, based on which to check the reasonability of the price hikes on products of each company. The council will host a discussion meeting if the companies don’t lower their prices even when there are factors for price reduction such as decreased cost of raw materials in order to identify the factors of price increase and propose appropriate range of price reduction.
The Korea National Council of Consumer Organizations will hold a discussion meeting on price stabilization based on cost analysis on February 11 to show the objectives and significance of the Cost Analysis Team and develop plans for the future.
