Announcement of the analysis of consumer counseling in 2011

Increased by 69,898 cases (14.6%) compared to consumer counseling in 2010

The Korea National Council of Consumer Organizations (KNCCO) (President Kim Jae-ok) has analyzed the cases of consumer counseling in 2011 accepted at 1372 Consumer Counseling Center of 10 consumer organizations nationwide.

The number of consumer counseling applied in 2011 was 549,069 in total, which is an increase of 69,898 cases (14.6%) from 479,171 cases applied the previous year.

Looking at the consulted items, clothing, fabric, and accessories was comprised of 83,534 cases (15.2%, 10.5% increase from the previous year), IT service, 59,374 cases (10.8%, 2.9% increase from the previous year), IT devices, 57,045 cases (10.4%, 39.4% increase from the previous year), culture and amusement service, 34,281 cases (6.2%, 32% increase from the previous year), and foods and items of personal preference, 34,278 cases (6.2%, 6.1% increase from the previous year).

Counseling on banking and IT devices increased sharply.

Among the items consulted, the biggest increase occurred in the counseling on banking, which increased by 42.7% from the previous year (2010: 10,802 cases, 2011: 15,412 cases). It is thought that inquiries about the safety of the non-monetary institutions increased with the suspension of the operation of savings banks in 2011 as well as the inquiries about the prospect of relief in the future.

Counseling on IT devices also increased considerably by 39.4% compared to the previous year (2010: 40,935 cases, 2011: 57,045 cases). In particular, the counseling related to cell phones and smart phones increased greatly by 64.5% from the previous year (2010: 24,998 cases, 2011: 41,131 cases). It resulted from smart phone fever in 2010 and 2011. Much of the cases consulted were concerned with the quality of third generation smart phones and beyond.

Meanwhile, in March, 2011, inquiries from those who were planning on overseas travel almost doubled from the previous month (Feb.: 566 cases, Mar.: 1,001 cases) due to the strong earthquake and the accident at the nuclear power plant in Fukushima, Japan. Consumers must have been afraid of visiting Japan in fear of the radioactive material exhumed by the nuclear power plant after the earthquake. They asked not only about Japan, but also the regions in and around the Pacific Ocean.

Planning to continue damage-relieving and monitoring activities through counseling

KNCCO will continue to relieve damage of consumers focusing on frequently consulted items, strengthen its education and PR activities, and monitoring companies and the market. It will also keep making efforts to enhance consumers' trust in consumer counseling by upgrading efficiency of the counseling office operations.
