Korea National Council of Consumer Organization has decided on
the 『Consumer Rights Promotion Award』 |

The Korea National Council of Consumer Organizations (Chairperson Gyeong-Soon Ju) awards the 『Consumer Rights Promotion Award』 every year to members of the National Assembly with an outstanding track record for the past year in terms of consumer rights promotion. The winners of the 『Consumer Rights Promotion Award』 in 2019 were Byun Jae-il (Democratic Party) and Jeon Jae-soo (Democratic Party).
For the 『Consumer Rights Promotion Award』the track records of the eligible members were evaluated for the period from November 1st, 2017 to December 31st, 2018. The data on the legislative activities (representative initiatives, joint initiatives), budget support activities (budget allocation, execution, etc.), and the support activities, such as system improvements, investigations, research, press releases, etc., were evaluated according to the extent of the contribution to the promotion of consumer rights. This year, two out of the 19 lawmakers were selected as honorary winners.
Byun Jae-il (Democratic Party) did much to promote consumer rights through consumer-related legislative activities, budget support activities and institutional improvements. He was highly evaluated for his representative initiatives in the bills of the Personal Information Protection Act, the Act on the Promotion of Information and Communication Network Utilization and Information Protection, the Nakdonggang River Water System Management, and the Resident Support Act, as well as for his joint initiatives concerning the bills of the Act on the Safety Management of Radiation Around the Living, the Act on the Promotion of Environment-Friendly Agriculture and Fisheries, and the Management and Support of Organic Foods.
Jeon Jae-soo (Democratic Party) was noted for his many legislative activities substantially related to consumer rights and his support activities such as institutional improvements and media coverage. He was highly evaluated for his representative initiatives for the bills of the Consumer Basic Act, Product Liability Act, Financial Real Name Transactions and Confidentiality Act, Consumer Protection Act in Electronic Commerce, etc., as well as for his joint initiatives concerning the bills {FT60} of the Special Act on the Safety Management of Children’s Eating, the Basic Act on Product Safety, and the Act on the Safety Management of Living Chemical Products and Biocides.
The 『Consumer Rights Promotion Award』selection committee is composed of Chairman Lee Gi-soo (Chairman of the Korea Arbitrators Association and former President of Korea University), Prof. Lee Seung-shin (Konkuk University and former Korean Consumer Agency Commissioner), Lawyer Jeong (Legal Corporation Shim Yeon and former Korean Consumer Agency Commissioner), Representative Jeong Mi-hwa (Citizens’ Coalition for Economic Justice), and the Heads of 11 member organizations of the Korea National Council of Consumer Organizations.
The award ceremony will be held at the Korea Press Center International Conference Hall (20th Floor) from 9 a.m. on March 15th (Fri).
