KNCCO 's Price Survey on the Daily Necessities in the First Half of 2011

On the third Thursday and Friday of each month from January 2011 to June 2011, the Korean National Council of Consumer Organizations (KNCCO) (President Kim Jae-ok) surveyed the prices of 18 daily necessities sold in 300 distribution stores including department stores, large scale discount marts, SSM, and large supermarkets located in Seoul (See Attachment 1).

Prices of 15 items from among the 18 items rose, compared to the beginning of 2011, and snack price increased by 23.4%

Among the 18 daily necessities, the prices of 15 items - cookies, snacks, flour, sugar, hot chili sauce, milk, vegetable oil, orange juice, coffee, ice cream, beer, tofu, diapers, packing materials, and toilet paper - rose in June 2011, as compared to January 2011. Meanwhile, the prices of 3 items, synthetic detergents, ramen, and powdered milk, fell in June as compared to those in January.

Of the 15 items, of which their prices went up, 7 items' prices ascended more than 5%, and 8 items' prices rose within 5%.

Especially, industrial products (diapers, packing materials, and synthetic detergents) of the 18 items did not show a huge change in prices with a change rate between -2.5% and 1.8%. Therefore, most price changes took place in the food items.

Since the burden to consumers is added, due to a continuous price hike, the instability of consumers should be solved through consolidated efforts of the government, businesses, and consumer organizations in the second half of 2011.

KNCCO constantly continues to monitor prices

The KNCCO will contribute to price stabilization through constant monitoring of the prices of daily necessities in the second half of 2011.
